A Change of Plan -- June 25, 2014

(Just a reminder -- you can click on the photos to see them larger)

I sleep in a little bit this morning....and it does look a little bit like rain, but we'll see....    I take my breakfast down to the lake and the sun seems as if it's trying to come out.... fingers crossed!  Still no one here until.......... a park employee comes by to check on trash, etc.  We talk for a few minutes and I mention my unlevel spot.  He says there's a space on down the lane that might be better.  He also tells me he just saw a huge great horned owl and also talks about his bear sightings.  Now that's the kind of wildlife I'd like to see! He mentions another campground a few miles down the road, too, that I might like.  Island Campground.... also part of the Monongahela National Forest.

I go back to the RV to make a plan and this is greeting me -- wildlife!

I already knew I wanted to take a hike around the lake, so that would take me past the site John mentioned. Off I go.  Found the site ....  nice and "tree'd" but too small and not level.  I continue my walk around the lake to see things from a different perspective.  Fields of ferns on the other side all growing among the dense tree population.  Really pretty!

Lots of little pine seedlings, too.

As I was nearing the end of the lake circle, some canoes were going into the water.  Later found out they were from a children's camp not too far away.  The colors were vivid against the lake water and they were having fun!  Great day to be on the water!

After finding that second site not really adequate, I decide to pack up and head over to Island Campground since it was so close.  I said 'goodbye' to beautiful Buffalo Lake and headed out.  And, just like John had said, it was just a few miles down "28".....

So, I pull in and immediately there are parking sites...all empty....but I remembered he said "go down to the loop" ---and something about there's a little stream back there.  I pass about 10 sites that were situated right on the lane and then, "the loop".  I look to the left and sitting WAY back in the trees is a HUGE site!  I mean, three rigs could fit back there!  I pull into site #12 and it looks great!  And level! (The whole "level-thing" has to do with refrigeration.  At Buffalo Lake I was losing the "chill factor"!  Luckily I had thought ahead and put some things in the cooler.) Anyway, I park....and am thanking John the whole time!

I jump out and I'm right on the creek!  This is great!  Again, all to myself AND it's not raining! AND IT'S FREE!

I get situated, make a sandwich, and race out to hike down the creek.  Reminds me of where we used to hike...called *Creekland* near Hueston Woods State Park.  I walk a long way down the creek just soaking in "nature" at it's best.  No fossils or horn coral like is so abundant at Creekland, but beautiful just the same!

I stopped for awhile and ate my sandwich...basking in the sun on a big rock...perfect lunchtime bench!

Of course, as usual, I took tons of photos....won't bore you with more water, rocks and trees!  You get the idea!  Welcome to my back yard!

It did finally start raining off and on....rain, sun, rain, sun....a little too wet to eat dinner outside, but my view from the dining area was nice and peaceful...along with a mango pina colada!  Might have to have two of those!  I knew I brought my Ninja blender along for more than "healthy" smoothies!!

When there weren't raindrops, I kept venturing outside so as to not lose the glow of the great site I had!  I know every day won't be like it has been so far in this adventure, but for now....just "stay in the moment" ! I went to the creek for one last short walk and left my mark---

Night fell and all I could hear were the night creek creatures and the water gurgling by....it was about 65* and low humidity.  Perfection!  Off to sleep.....Thanks, John, for telling me about this great spot!  I have a new appreciation for West Virginia!

Onward to Bartow, WV and Lake Buffalo - June 24, 2014

Have not had cell service for two days in the mountains!

After a good night's sleep, I had a good outdoor breakfast at the Lane Farm CG site.  Beautiful, cool temps! Packed up and set the GPS to Buffalo Lake.  I've learned to trust it no matter where it takes me!  I was glad I did because in just a few minutes it took me on a back road to a covered bridge....that was a nice surprise!

HILL'S COVERED BRIDGE

On up the hill, was an old cemetery...another nice surprise.  Since I didn't make it to Mounds Cemetery in Marietta, I decided to stop.  Lots of interesting headstones...bear with me with my old cemetery fascination!

HILL'S METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY

I'm now on a one lane road...wondering if I really do trust my GPS!  But I keep going.  In another few minutes a deer runs across the road and then just stops....stops long enough for me to get his picture...he was posing - his 5 seconds of fame!

Onward I go...then wild turkeys cross my path but they weren't in the mood for a portrait!  A few hundred yards further, a big red-tailed hawk was waiting for me on a fence post.  Also, not in the picture taking mood.

Well, trusting GPS was a good thing.  I finally came upon Route 7 in Newport, OH...and the Ohio River.  Stopped and got this  morning shot:

Now...onward to Bartow.  I had to cross Cheat Mountain....YIKES!  Hairpin turns...one after another after another...can you say, "white nuckles"??  LOL!  But we made up....AND over!  Finally arrive in Bartow....and the Monongahela National Forest.  Nothing much in Bartow, so I was curious as to what Lake Buffalo would be like.  Saw the sign....turned onto a gravel road.  For 3 miles I was getting more and more curious.  Well........here is Lake Buffalo!  Worth the white nuckles!

I was able to park right at the entrance.  Unlevel spot, but I'll talk about that later.  Beautiful lake....and no one here!  Perfect!  I settled in and immediately wanted to hike around.  Walked down the lane to the far end of the lake....pretty forests....pretty weather!  It's not a big lake, but situated in a wonderful location.... away from everything!  Sat by the lake for a long time just enjoying the scenery. Eventually rustled up another chicken dinner.  Wondered if there would be a sunset later.....waited....waited...as the sun came down....

And yes!  There would be a pretty nice sunset!  The resident Canadian geese family agreed!

And......I had it all to myself!!  A great ending to my adventure's second day!   Time to turn in....another cool, peaceful night ahead!

MAIDEN VOYAGE SUCCESS !

I landed safe and sound at the Lane Farm Campground in Wayne National Forest (Marietta, OH - but maybe actually in Parkersburg, WV - hard to tell!) yesterday afternoon!  I was a little delayed by roadwork, traffic accident, refrigerator and freezer doors swinging open, and a cabinet door that wouldn't stay shut, but, duck tape took care of that!

Stopped at a rest stop that was off the roadway a bit, just prior to getting to Marietta.  Upon exiting, there was a tiny little church.  Come to find out, it's the smallest church in Ohio!  It's called The Healing Chapel. I felt like that was a good omen!

THE HEALING CHAPEL

Into Marietta was relatively uneventful, but once on the other side of town going toward the campground, I had my practice with twists, turns, and steep grades up and down, but that's hill country!  Also contributed to having no Verizon cell service.

The little campground (only 4 spots) was perfect!  Even more so because I was the only one there!

Behind the trees and down a bank was a creek, which was nice. No trails to speak of, but I went back into the woods anyway!  It was very hot and humid, but it's summer!  No bugs, tho'!

Night settled in.  I turned on the generator for a few minutes to cool the house down and charge up some electronics.  I had a drink with *mostly ice* and great dinner of spicy curried chicken and rice which I had made up/frozen ahead of time. Worked on these photos and did some reading.  Temps started falling and it was a very pleasant night in the trees at about 65*.  Perfect for sleeping!

Successful first day on Adventure Road!

It's Tuesday noon right now and I'm in Weston, WV at McDonald's to charge up the laptop, download some more pics and post this blog.  Headed to Bartow, WV (about 1.5 hrs from here)......and Buffalo Lake - supposed to be FREE camping there!  We'll see!

Happy Trails, for now!

Blast Off Eve!

All systems go!

Everything that can be checked has been checked!  I've been spending enough time in the RV for it to feel like "home".  That's a good start!  Just like a studio apartment, only with wheels!  The bonus is, if you don't like where you are "living", you just drive away!

The route has changed just slightly.  I won't be staying near Athens, OH tomorrow night....rather, near Marietta, OH.  Found a FREE campsite there....but only four spaces!  Taking my chances that it won't be "full" on a Monday.  If it is....no worries! There's always Walmart!

Speaking of Marietta, OH, there's a great company there-- Rossi Pasta!  They make all their pasta by hand for the past 33 years.  I visited their establishment many years ago.  If I'm in the vicinity, I'll stop there tomorrow. GREAT pasta and GREAT pasta gift baskets if you are in a quandary about what to give someone...makes a nice hostess gift or gift for those who just like pasta!  And who doesn't?? Check out their website:  www.rossipasta.com.

Want to check out Mound Cemetery, in Marietta, if I have time....did I mention I love photographing in cemeteries??  I have a list via FindAGrave.com from people who would like photos of ancestors' headstones, etc. from this cemetery.  I know...seems kind of morbid, but I don't find it that way at all. Interestingly, this cemetery has the highest number of burials of American Revolutionary War officers in the country.

Anyway, nothing to do now but realize I'm starting a new lifestyle in a few hours!

I'll be posting as I go along, so don't go anywhere!  I think I might start "pages" now with this blog...but .have to figure that out.  Obviously, everything is contingent upon having internet service! But, you understand that!  Technology life as I've known it will come to a screeching halt soon, but that's okay.... it's all what you get used to!  I believe I'm old enough to remember that life moved along peacefully prior to emails and blogs!

For now....Over And Out!

5-4-3-2-1

I think the blog is back in business now....apparently it doesn't like 'cutting and pasting'....hardly a new concept!

5-4-3-2-1 --- I believe this is the REAL countdown to lift off this time! Monday is the day!  A few days delayed getting out of here for various reasons but that's okay!  No hard and fast time table.  Just need to be in Raleigh NC by July 2-3.

First stop will be Wayne National Forest near Athens, OH for one night... then onto Bartow, WV (Monongahela National Forest), for probably two nights...then to Powhatan Lake, VA for ??? nights...then on into Raleigh to see my diving buddies, Laine and Mary Ann.  We are going to their very cool house on Harkers Island for the July 4th weekend.  It will be really fun to see them....best diving buddies ever!

These stops are all "no hook up" sites.  Athens is $9/night, the other two are FREE!  YAY!  No hooks was on purpose.  I didn't want to start out doing everything the easy way.  Under that premise, anytime I have hookups - electric, water and/or sewer -- it will be a 5-star hotel experience!  Of course, I have the generator, but I don't want to live off that any more than I really need to.  Plan on keeping that usage to the bare minimum.  Will definitely make use of the new solar panel!

My very good friends, G&M, gave me a very cool vintage bicycle as a going away gift.  Mark shined up the fenders like new and put on new tires!  It's a 10-speed, Schwinn Varsity - probably about 35 years old.  They were manufactured between 1959-1986.  Looks great and rides even better!  Has the original basket on the front, too.  If  I'm not too far away from a town, I can tour around on the bike and pick up some grocery items, etc.....since I don't have a toad (towed vehicle).  A lot of parks have biking areas, too.  It will be great!  Here's a little interesting history:

Remembering the bike today, it's easy to forget that the first years of its production, the Varsity sales (combined with its slightly upscale brother, the Continental) were greater than those of all other U.S. derailer bikes combined.  When the production run was finally over, the Schwinn Varsity had been manufactured in greater numbers than any other single model of derailer-geared bike in the world - EVER, and still holds the record with 2 million sold.  Built with unique technology to meet an entry-level price point, it was the only bike in the national market in the 1960s that was simultaneously inexpensive enough to get non-cycling adults to give it a try, and well-built enough to make them conclude, "Hey, this is fun!"  The Varsity was the foundation of reintroducing American adults to the  joys of cycling and a cornerstone in building the modern adult cycling infrastructure of events, clothing, magazines, clubs, businesses, etc.  The Varsity is the single most significant American bicycle.

Mine is already on the back of the RV, but it looks like this WITH the cool, original front basket!

WOW!  I am going to feel very special riding this special bike!  Thanks, special friends, G&M!!

So, at this point, I'm just camping out in front of my house pulling these last few issues together.  Not hooking to electricity and not turning on the A/C....pretend boondocking!  LOL!

Won't be much to report until take off day.  Hopefully, anyone reading this up to this point will see that the whole RVing thing is possible...even if you don't know what the heck you're doing! That would be ME, but I've learned a lot over the past weeks! Say goodbye to "stuff", make a plan, take one day at a time and you will be at your lift off date, too!

Anyone Getting Curious??

....about the interior of my RV? Well, take a look!

This is what they call an "inside joke"!  LOL!  NOOOOOOO....this is NOT my RV!  Can you imagine?  I downsized to an RV to have less to do....this would be just like a house to maintain!  Nice for many people, I suppose, but not really for me.

I promise!  I WILL be posting some pics of the interior soon!  Just thought I'd give everyone a glimpse of the "other side" of RVing!

Only about five days til 'take off' !
